Snapdrop not working the way you remember? The site probably isn't down. Since February 2025, snapdrop.net has been a LimeWire upload service, so there's no list of nearby devices any more, just upload buttons and a share link that lasts three days without an account. The old peer-to-peer Snapdrop lives on at snapdrop.me, and the fixes below cover it and the PairDrop fork.
The short answer
- snapdrop.net isn't down or broken. It became a LimeWire upload-and-link service in February 2025, so devices never appear on it now.
- Files sent there are stored by LimeWire. Without an account you get up to 4 GB per transfer, 20 files or 4 GB a day, and a link that lasts 3 days.
- For the old peer-to-peer Snapdrop, open snapdrop.me (linked by Snapdrop's creator since 14 September 2026) or PairDrop on both devices, on the same Wi-Fi.
- Devices still missing? Use the same network, turn off any VPN, and on Apple devices check iCloud Private Relay.
- Different networks, or no time to troubleshoot? Beamaroo's P2P file transfer sends files device to device with a one-time code, without uploading them.
Is Snapdrop down? No, snapdrop.net is a different service now
Open snapdrop.net today and you get Upload Files and Upload Folder buttons where the device icons used to be. You upload, the site gives you a share link, and the other device downloads from limewire.com. Its own FAQ explains: 'Snapdrop is part of LimeWire now and transfers run through LimeWire storage instead of a direct browser-to-browser connection.'
So if you're waiting for your phone to pop up next to your laptop, it won't, however many times you refresh. That's not an outage: on 31 October 2026 the site loaded normally. If you get a warning page instead, check your ad blocker (next section).
Why your devices don't show up any more
The old Snapdrop ran a small server that grouped visitors by public IP address, so every device on your network saw the others, and files then went directly between them over WebRTC. The current snapdrop.net has none of that. Its old networking script is now a stub with no peer-to-peer code, and uploads go to api.limewire.com. There's nothing left to discover.
If the page won't open and you get a block or warning screen, check for uBlock Origin. Its default 'Badware risks' list includes snapdrop.net (checked 31 October 2026), following a February 2025 report (issue #27172) that the site had switched to LimeWire's cloud service. As one commenter there put it, 'It is not clear you're uploading files to their servers.' The warning page lets you go back or proceed. Why it's listed, and what that means for your files, is in is Snapdrop safe.
Need the file moved now? Beam it instead
Open this page on both devices, pick files on one and type the code on the other. It works across different networks, and nothing is uploaded or stored. Keep both screens on until it lands. Phones are comfortable up to a few hundred MB, computers up to about 1–2 GB.

How snapdrop.net works now, and its limits
You upload on one device, the page gives you a link, and the other device opens it on limewire.com. There's no pairing, the devices don't need to share a network, and the recipient doesn't need to be online when you send. These are the limits snapdrop.net lists, which it says come from the storage service:
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Per transfer | Up to 4 GB without an account |
| Per day | 20 files and 4 GB of uploads |
| Link lifetime | 3 days, then the link stops and the file is removed |
| Downloads | 10 a day per file, and 12 GB in total per link |
| Folders | Yes, with Upload Folder |
| Free LimeWire account | 40 GB of storage; 10 GB and 50 files a day |
| Paid LimeWire plans | 250 GB or 500 GB per transfer, no three-day expiry |
Snapdrop not uploading? Check the file is under 4 GB and you haven't passed 20 files or 4 GB today. Keep the tab open until the link appears, because the upload runs in the browser. And remember anyone holding the link can open the file, so send it only to the person it's for.
Snapdrop without LimeWire: getting peer-to-peer back
Three ways to get the original behaviour back. None of them uploads your files.
- snapdrop.me. The classic Snapdrop, linked from creator Robin Linus's GitHub since 14 September 2026. Open it on both devices on the same network, tap the other device's icon, and the file goes straight across. Its FAQ says 'None of your files are ever sent to any server.'
- PairDrop. The open-source Snapdrop fork at pairdrop.net, which the Snapdrop Android app switched to in February 2025. It finds devices on the same network the way Snapdrop did, and adds pairing with a 6-digit code and temporary public rooms for devices on other networks.
- Your own copy. Snapdrop and PairDrop can both be self-hosted with Docker. Even LimeWire's notice on the old repository says you can still 'download and run the classic Snapdrop on your own infrastructure'.
Other sites use the Snapdrop name too, so check who runs one before you trust it with a file. More options, including ones that work across networks, are in Snapdrop alternatives compared.
Still not connecting? Fixes for classic Snapdrop and PairDrop
- Put both devices on the same network. snapdrop.me matches devices by public IP address, so a phone on mobile data won't see a laptop on home Wi-Fi. Join the same Wi-Fi on both.
- Turn off any VPN. A VPN gives a device a different public address, so the server files it under a different network.
- Check iCloud Private Relay on iPhone, iPad or Mac. It hides your IP address from websites in Safari, which can stop the devices finding each other. For that site, tap the Page Menu button and choose Show IP Address (on a Mac, View → Reload and Show IP Address), or turn off Limit IP Address Tracking for your network in Settings → Wi-Fi → More Info. Apple's steps.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi. Some routers, especially on guest networks, stop devices talking to each other (AP isolation). Classic Snapdrop has no relay to fall back on, so a transfer can fail even when both icons appear.
- In Chrome, consider allowing the microphone if snapdrop.me asks. It offers this after a connection fails. The site says microphone access 'helps Chrome connect to nearby devices', that it switches the mic on only briefly, and that 'No audio is recorded or sent.'
- Reload both pages, then keep them open. Leave both screens on until the transfer finishes.
- On different networks, pair in PairDrop or use a public room. Its README names iCloud Private Relay, VPNs and company networks as the cases these are for. Relayed transfers are slower; PairDrop's FAQ suggests a hotspot on one device to connect the two directly.
Snapdrop not working on iPhone
On snapdrop.net, the upload runs in the Safari tab, so stay on that page until the link appears. On snapdrop.me or PairDrop, put the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi as the other device rather than mobile data, check iCloud Private Relay as above, and keep the screen on during the transfer.
There's no official Snapdrop or PairDrop iPhone app. App Store apps using those names come from unrelated sellers, and one 'PairDrop' app sells weekly and lifetime plans. PairDrop's FAQ says to open pairdrop.net in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Moving files from an iPhone to a Windows PC? Our iPhone to PC file transfer guide covers the options.
If it still won't connect, send it another way
When the devices are on different networks, one is a work laptop you can't change, or you simply need the file across, skip discovery altogether. Beamaroo, which we make, pairs the two devices with a one-time code instead of a shared network and sends the file straight across, encrypted, without uploading it. An encrypted relay steps in when a network blocks a direct path.
The trade-offs: both devices stay online with the screen on, there's no resume, folders need zipping, and big files depend on the receiving device's memory. For more options, see our guide to sharing files without uploading them.
Questions
Is Snapdrop down?
Not as of 31 October 2026. snapdrop.net loads, but it's a LimeWire upload page now, so the device list is gone. If you get a warning page instead, it's likely uBlock Origin's badware filter, not an outage.
Why is Snapdrop not showing my other devices?
snapdrop.net doesn't discover devices any more; you upload a file and share a link. For devices that appear automatically, open snapdrop.me or PairDrop on both, on the same Wi-Fi, with any VPN off.
Did LimeWire buy Snapdrop?
Yes. A 'Snapdrop is now LimeWire' notice went up on the project's GitHub on 10 February 2025, and LimeWire announced the deal on X on 21 May 2025. LimeWire itself was sold in September 2026, according to a press release naming the BabyDoge ecosystem as the buyer.
Can I use Snapdrop without LimeWire?
Yes. snapdrop.me works like the classic peer-to-peer Snapdrop and is linked from its creator's GitHub. You can also self-host the open-source code, or use the PairDrop fork.
What is snapdrop.me?
It's the original Snapdrop, linked from creator Robin Linus's GitHub since 14 September 2026. Files go straight between devices on the same network. We found no announcement beyond that GitHub change.
What is the Snapdrop upload limit now?
Without an account, snapdrop.net allows up to 4 GB per transfer and 20 files or 4 GB a day, and links expire after 3 days. A free LimeWire account raises the daily limits, and paid plans go to 250 GB or 500 GB per transfer.
Why isn't Snapdrop working on my iPhone?
On snapdrop.net, keep Safari on the page until the upload finishes. On snapdrop.me or PairDrop, put the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi as the other device and check iCloud Private Relay, which hides your IP address from websites and can stop the devices finding each other.
